The 31st Olympic Games was held in Brazil in the city of Rio recently. 207 countries across the world participated in these games bringing together 11000 sportsmen and women competing for the medals. America topped the medals table with the United Kingdom coming in second place. Because the Olympic Games is a special occasion, every country issues a stamp to celebrate the event signifying their participation.
Among the entries received for the stamp to be issued in Sri Lanka, lay preacher Givantha Arthasad’s creation has been selected. The National Philatelic Bureau recently released this stamp and it is available in the denominations of Rs. 8/-, 10/-, 35/- and 50/-. The first stamp was issued to HE Mathripala Sirisena President of Sri Lanka.
